HOUSING

Young people live with their parents for a long time, many of them into their thirties, as finding a job can be a huge challenge. Buying a place to live is not easy when costs are compared with income. Many people rent an apartment while trying to scrape together enough money to start to buy their own home. Prices vary depending on the area (kvart in Zagreb slang) and the age of the building, but the price range is from 1,500 to 4,000 euros per square meter. In the city centers people live in apartments, while in the outskirts you will find family houses. The hilly part of the Zagreb area and the slopes on the west side are more expensive, and where the wealthier people live. There you will see nineteenth-century houses with beautiful Art Nouveau architecture and huge gardens, and modern villas with high-tech features such as twenty-four-hour surveillance cameras and garages with remotely operated doors, also with gardens. However, these buildings are not walled in the Russian style; they stand next to other houses and blend into the landscape.
